If your bubbles pop a split second after leaving the wand, the culprit is almost always too little soap, dry air stealing moisture from the film, or a blowing technique that's too rough — raise your surfactant ratio, add a thickener, and blow slower and steadier.
The most common cause: not enough soap or thickener
A soap film pops when it thins out too fast — the water evaporates or drains away by gravity before the bubble ever settles into a stable shape. If you bump up your surfactant (more soap per liter of water), you're giving the film more "material" to resist that thinning. The classic ratio cited in bubble-science guides is roughly 1 part soap to 4 parts water; if your mix is more diluted than that, that's usually the problem.
Steps to fix your mix
- Increase the soap: if you're below roughly 1:6 (soap:water), work your way up toward 1:4.
- Add a well-hydrated thickener like guar gum: no lumps, and it thickens the film, buying it more time before it breaks.
- Add glycerin (or corn syrup/sugar as an alternative): it locks water into the film and slows evaporation, the direct physical reason bubbles pop "on their own" in mid-air.
- Let the mix rest for a few hours before using it: the soap and thickener need time to fully blend.
Check your blowing technique too
- Blow with a steady, gentle stream, never a sudden burst: a rough gust stretches the film faster than the soap can compensate.
- Avoid dry surfaces or objects (grass, dry hands, clothing): any dry contact pops a bubble instantly, no matter how good your solution is.
