Bubbles bounce when you avoid direct skin contact (use cloth gloves, or clean, damp hands with no lotion or oil) and when the mix has enough polymer and soap to form a thick, elastic film. Glycerin isn't actually the key to bouncing — its real job is extending bubble life in very humid air — but it does help keep the film from drying out too fast while you're playing with it.
Why they bounce (and why they usually don't)
A regular bubble pops the instant it touches your skin because the natural oils on your hands break the surface tension of the soap film almost instantly. If you put a barrier in the way — a cotton or wool glove, or just very clean, wet hands with no cream or grease — the soap film never meets that oil, so the bubble can land, flex, and bounce instead of bursting.
The mix that helps
You need a "tougher" formula than your everyday play bubbles: more soap, a thickening polymer, and optionally glycerin so the film doesn't dry out between bounces. A classic ratio is 3 parts water, 1 part dish soap, and 1 part glycerin, left to rest for 24 hours to mature.
- Bump the soap up slightly compared to a standard bubble mix — more surfactant gives the film more elasticity.
- Add guar gum or PVA if you want more mechanical toughness against impact (the "durable" goal in the simulator).
- Glycerin is optional, but it pays off most in high humidity.
- Let the mix rest for at least a few hours before using it.
How to bounce them
- Put on dry cloth gloves (not rubber or snow gloves), or wet your clean hands well, with no lotion or leftover soap.
- Blow medium-sized bubbles, not giant ones — they're easier to control.
- Let the bubble drift gently onto your open palm; don't swat at it or grab it.
- To bounce one on the ground, use a smooth surface free of dust or grease — a clean blanket works better than grass.
